Scholarships and Awards

Most universities offer scholarships. Unlike having to pay back a loan, you do not need to pay back a scholarship. Universities award scholarships based on academic merit, financial need, extracurricular activities and other distinctions.

You can apply for some scholarships and may be automatically considered for others.

Universities host events like open houses, campus tours, Student for a Day programs, and virtual tours to help you explore what student life is really like. These events are a great way to experience the campus, connect with current students and faculty, and get a feel for whether a university is the right fit for you.

Basic Requirements for Admission

You must successfully complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma with at least six 4U/M credits, including program prerequisites. Find specific admission requirements and program prerequisites.

If your grades were affected by exceptional circumstances that can be documented, you are encouraged to contact the Office of the Registrar with the appropriate information. Find information on what constitutes an exceptional circumstance.

The specific average or standing required for admission varies from year to year. We select students by taking into consideration a wide range of criteria, including school grades, distribution of subjects taken and performance in subjects relevant to the academic program. Possessing the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance and, due to space limitations, preference will be given to applicants with the best qualifications.

Faculties may also require additional assessment of the suitability of a student for admission. This may include, but is not limited to: Personal and professional characteristic assessments, supplemental application documents and admission interviews.

We reserve the right to determine acceptable academic credentials, grades and prerequisite courses to be used for admission and/or awards.

Failed and Repeated Courses

We use the highest grade obtained in a course in calculating averages.

Timing and Process for Admission Decisions

New applications are processed on a regular basis and decisions are made when grade information is submitted. Log in to your Applicant Portal for the most current information and updates.

Academic Prep - Summer Transition Programs

Promotes academic and personal success by providing insight about what it will be like to be a student at our university.
Meet fellow classmates, faculty and staff, learn strategies for attending university lectures and discuss what makes your university experience unique.
Free, interactive sessions that provide you with a recap of foundational academic concepts for your program.
Learn about study skills and time management and develop effective strategies to be successful in university.
Non-credit; registration required.
We strongly recommend the sessions and offer specialized programming for all programs.
Offered in the summer.

Accessibility Summer Transition Programming

Program for incoming students with documented disabilities.
Understand the real differences between high school, college and university.
Learn about self-advocacy and how to use your strengths.
Become immersed in the software you will use every day in our technology-enriched learning environment.
Learn tried-and-true strategies to make the most of your university experience.
Meet key staff who will provide academic and learning support.
Become familiar with the campus and the Oshawa area.
Offered throughout August.
Registration required.

Faculty Registration Information Sessions

Registration for our unique programs is not the same for every student; we offer faculty- and program-specific information sessions.
Designed to give you all the information you need to successfully register for your courses.
Live sessions are offered throughout the summer and are run by your faculty’s academic advising team.

Orientation

Ontario Tech’s largest transition program, geared toward students who are beginning classes in September.
Prepare for success in your first year by learning from upper-year students who volunteer their time to welcome you to the university community.
Orientation will provide you with opportunities to:
- Familiarize yourself with the campus.
- Learn how to get the most from your university experience.
- Meet new friends, faculty and staff.
- Participate in engaging activities and traditions, unique to Ontario Tech.
Offered at the beginning of September.

Peer Leader Mentoring Program

Fosters a culture of inclusivity and support throughout your postsecondary journey and beyond.
The program ensures you have the opportunity to connect with the mentorship community, receive support and engage with your peers.
Peer Leader Mentoring program goals include:
- Establishing an inclusive and welcoming community of peers that cultivates a network and culture of mentorship.
- Providing support and guidance through various transitions in your postsecondary journey, from acceptance to post-graduation.
- Engaging you in personal growth, lifelong learning and leadership opportunities through flexible, experiential programming that leverages the development of interpersonal, academic and professional skills.
- Creating a unified mentorship network that fosters respectful, interdisciplinary connections between individual peer programs and provides opportunities for collaborative programming.

Room Types

Our Simcoe Village (North Hall, Central Hall, South Hall and South Hall Quads) and South Village residences offer a variety of fully furnished suites:

North Hall and South Village offer semi-private suites that feature 2 bedrooms with a double XL bed in each
Central Hall and South Hall are open-concept suites that feature 2 double XL beds separated by a partition
South Hall Quads are open-concept suites that feature 2 double bunk beds separated by a partition

Each includes:

Wi-Fi and ethernet ports
Kitchenette with a fridge and microwave
Private, 3-piece bathroom
Workspace

Applications: Residence applications for September become available online in late February.

First year residents are guaranteed a spot in Residence if they submit their application by the June deadline listed on the Residence website.

Residence Guarantee

A space in residence is guaranteed for all first-year students who submit their residence application and application fee by the June deadline listed on the Residence website
Hall type assignments are determined in early to mid-summer
Roommate self-selection takes place in early August

Deposit Required

The June deadline to complete the residence application and pay your residence application fee is listed on the Residence website.

Meal Plans

Students living in South Village Residence are required to purchase a mandatory meal plan.
Students living in Simcoe Village Residence can purchase a voluntary dining plan.
