Language Requirements
General Requirements
If English is not your first language (i.e., is not the first language you learned at home as a child), you will need to provide evidence of adequate English facility for admission consideration, unless you qualify for an exemption.
You may qualify for an exemption from the English-language requirement if one of the following applies to you:
- You have completed/are completing 4 or more years of full-time academic study in a recognized Canadian school (in Canada) that teaches in English.
- You have completed/are completing 4 or more years of full-time academic study in an English-language school located in a country where the dominant language is English.
- Your first language is French and you have completed 4 or more years of full-time academic study at a Canadian school.
All applicants, including those who must present proof of English facility, are required to present a senior-level English course (equivalent to Ontario ENG4U/EAE4U) for admission to all undergraduate programs. The English course result will be considered in the admissions process and calculated as part of an applicant’s admission average.
Read more about English facility requirements and other acceptable tests/qualifications.
Discretionary Range
If your test result falls into the following discretionary ranges, it will be reviewed automatically. You will be notified if your discretionary range score satisfies the English-language requirement. As we cannot guarantee that the score will be accepted, it is recommended that you arrange to take another test if the official results cannot be submitted to us by the appropriate document deadline.
French as a First Language
If French is your first language and you achieved satisfactory academic progress in at least 4 years of full-time study in Canada, you are not required to provide proof of English facility.

Basic Requirements for Admission
All Ontario high school applicants are required to present six 4U/M courses, including ENG4U and all prerequisites.
Failed and Repeated Courses
While recognizing that there may be valid reasons to repeat a course, the U of T reserves the right to give preference to students whose marks are the result of a single attempt at each course.
Timing and Process for Admission Decisions
Depending on the faculty, the program of study, the campus and your academic record, conditional offers of admission based on final 3U/M and interim or final 4U/M results will be made during admission rounds occurring between mid-February and late May. Offers will be made subject to space availability.
All offers of admission are conditional upon final results and completing the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
